We start this update on an incredibly sad and difficult note by offering our condolences, thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of Connor Gerber, who last week lost his fight against his long-term illness. It is always difficult to comprehend these things, particularly at such a young age. Connor will be remembered as a very brave and honourable young cricketer. His strength, will and unwavering sense of fair play belied the fact that that there was so much that was unfair in his life. His wonderful nature, character and smile will be sorely missed by all of us who had the honour to meet and work with this amazing young man.
On a more positive note, we have had some high profile events and visitors in recent weeks at the academy and HPC.
Dav Whatmore, Head Coach of Pakistan, paid us a visit during his team's recent tour to SA. This week we had the honour of hosting a CSA coaching seminar with many Provincial, National and international coaches and former players amongst the delegates. Cape Cobras players and coaches did some very intersesting practical sessions and discussions and we will be passing on these top level tips, as age-appropriate, to our young cricketers.
On Friday we were priveliged to be joined by Protea bowling superstar, Vernon Philander. Our younger players were delighted to meet their hero and a lucky few were joined in a mini match. How many 7/8 year olds can say they have played alongside a true star of international cricket?!
Vernon also spent some time passing on thoughts and knowledeg to some of our older boys who can only gain inspiration and focus from this sort of contact. "The Vern" was a true ambassador for the game and was a gentleman in showing amazing patience and humility with everyone he met. He really made a big impression on our youngsters and I, for one, am an even bigger fan now!
We are entering our winter phase now, focusing on technique, fitness and thinking clearly about your game.
We have a couple of openings in our weekend HPC program for our more experienced players. Please contact Laurie for more details.
Please accept my apologies if in recent weeks I have not answered a call, sms or e-mail from my phone. I have had various issues with my handset and provider but hope that this is all sorted now.
We are all looking forward to some serious work over the winter months to give our young players the edge in their cricket.
Yours in cricket,
The Complete Cricketer.
